About The Hospital
Founded in 1956, Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti is a 130-bed referral hospital that includes core services: surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics and high-risk maternity care. In support of these core programs, the hospital offers diagnostic services with X-ray and laboratory analyses. Significant additions include physical rehabilitation and the Hanger Clinic for prosthetics created to address the needs of the many amputees following the January 2010 earthquake.
HAS receives patients referred from four community HAS health centers, as well as health centers operated by the Ministry of Health (MSPP), and other volunteer organizations. HAS provides hospital care for over 300,000 people living within the 610 square mile service area. Emergency patients are received without referrals. Due to the shortage of surgical facilities in Port Au Prince following the January 2010 Earthquake, HAS regularly receives patients who require surgical intervention.
The hospital typically receives more than 100 outpatients each day, most of whom require diagnostic services which are not available in the referring health centers.
Approximately half of the hospital’s (average daily census of 130) inpatients are children, including more than 8 premature infants. While children are treated for a wide variety of diseases, malnutrition is also present in a majority of cases.
The hospital’s full-time complement of 14 physicians and 50 nurses are Haitian, supported by visiting specialists from the US and Europe. International volunteers are accepted on a pre-scheduled basis, depending on the clinical needs of the HAS patient population.
